About Speaker Bill Belichick…
Bill Belichick completed his 44th season as an NFL coach in 2018 and is in his 20th season as head coach of the New England Patriots. Belichick is the only head coach in NFL history to win six Super Bowl titles. In 2018, Belichick won a division title for the tenth consecutive season and won a ninth conference championship as a head coach, extending his NFL record in both categories. Belichick won 13 regular season games for an NFL-record seventh time and secured his 16th AFC East Division title as Patriots head coach, the most in NFL history.
Belichick, who was hired by Patriots Chairman and CEO Robert Kraft on Jan. 27, 2000, is in his 20th season with the Patriots. In 19 seasons, Belichick has so far delivered six Super Bowl championships, nine conference titles, 16 division crowns and 31 playoff victories, while posting an overall record of 255-89. Entering 2018, the Patriots have won ten consecutive division championships, besting the seven won by the L.A. Rams (1973-79). Belichick directed the Patriots to victories in Super Bowls XXXVI (2001), XXXVIII (2003), XXXIX (2004), XLIX (2014) and LI (2016), LIII (2018) and in 2007 he became the only NFL head coach to guide his team to a 16-0 regular season. From 2003 to 2004, Belichick directed the Patriots to a winning streak of 21 consecutive games, including the postseason.
Belichick’s 31 career playoff wins are the most all-time among head coaches, while New England’s 14 playoff victories from 2000-09 are tied for the most in any decade in NFL history.
Born into the sport, Bill Belichick is the son of Steve Belichick (1919-2005), who played fullback for the Detroit Lions in 1941, was an assistant coach at the U.S. Naval Academy for 33 years. Belichick senior instilled in his son an overarching love of the game and respect for the men who play it. Thanks in large measure to his father’s influence, Bill Belichick, who holds a degree in economics from Wesleyan University, brought not only passion to the gridiron, but insight and experience as well. Known as a man of remarkably modest ego, he believes that a team is truly “all about the players.” His philosophy of leadership, his willingness to give back to his community, and his record of success make Bill Belichick a man worth listening to.
