A Journey from Hatred to Understanding

About Keynote Speaker Richard McKinney

About Speaker Richard McKinney…

After 25 years in the armed services, and several tours in the Middle East, a Marine named Richard “Mac” McKinney came back to the United States filled with rage toward Muslims. In what he viewed as a final mission for his country, McKinney made plans to blow up the mosque in his Indiana hometown. However, an interaction with his own daughter changed the course of his life. Upon learning about his daughter’s friendship with a Muslim child – “Mac” filled with hate. However, his young daughter’s reaction of such disappointment to his prejudice was impactful… and ultimately changed his life. He decided to go to the mosque and meet members of the Muslim community. On his first visit to the mosque, he was welcomed by the community and was given a copy of the Quran… and it was suggested he return with any questions he had. He returned two months later… and followed a journey from hatred to understanding.

Testimonials

“Richard McKinney hit the right notes in his speech and connected very well with the audience. That was evident when the next two speakers including the guest of honor made a reference to Richard’s speech and molded their messages in the same vein of inclusivity and tolerance. A lot of people at the IMAGH gala were looking forward to seeing Richard in person and hearing what he had to say. I believe he made a lot of friends here and I noticed that he was invited again to Houston for another community event a couple of months ago.”

Altaf Akbari

Indian Muslims Association of Greater Houston

“Richard McKinney spoke eloquently and frankly about his transformation from being an enemy of Islam to becoming one of their own. He was not afraid to share a past that many would be ashamed of in the service of wider understanding and openness.”
