Black Female and DE&I Keynote Speaker Wema Hoover says it’s time to Debunk the ‘Black Girl Magic’ Myth

The media often paints the picture of Black female leaders as being invincible superwomen who possess magical qualities or are naturally gifted–but is this a dangerous stereotype?

According to Wema Hoover’s article in Fast Company, “This assigned impermeability has a significant impact on her mental, physical, and emotional health.”

No matter how successful, courageous, resilient, or heroic a person may be, they still deserve empathy, freedom to make mistakes, to take a mental health day, relax when needed and be seen and valued as a real human being.

“People expect Black women to be strong. We’re invincible. We’re magical, majestic, something other . . . Why can’t we just be human?” – Taraji P. Henson, Actress and Academy Award winner.

See how Wema debunks the myth of ‘Black girl magic” and advocates for mental wellness in her article featured in Fast Company.
