Embracing Inclusivity, Diversity, and Acceptance During Pride Month

“Equality means more than passing laws. The struggle is really won in the hearts and minds of the community, where it really counts.” – Barbara Gittings

In June 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City, a well-known gay bar at the time. Instead of submitting to the officers’ harassment and abuse, the patrons fought back. This event, known as the Stonewall Riots, sparked a movement for LGBTQ+ rights and became the catalyst for the first Pride Parade that took place in 1970.

Since then, the month of June has been recognized as Pride Month, a time to commemorate LGBTQ+ individuals’ identities and advocates’ contributions to their community. It’s a time for celebration, advocacy, and remembrance, and it is essential to understand the history behind it. Pride Month has come a long way, from a time of repression and discrimination to a time of acceptance and inclusion.
