Ron Johnson Shares the Leadership Principles Behind the Apple Store

BigSpeak keynote speaker Ron Johnson, the creator of the Apple Store, was recently interviewed on the podcast Sales Pop!, and shared the leadership principles that transformed Apple retail from a place to buy products into a destination people wanted to visit.

Instead of focusing on transactions, Apple designed stores around education, exploration, and customer connection. Johnson believes that “good things happen when people come to stores,” which is why the Apple Store prioritized hands-on experiences, expert support, and empowered employees over traditional sales tactics.

That approach helped Apple grow average store revenue from $10 million to $50 million while building extraordinary customer loyalty. Johnson’s message is clear: organizations that create memorable experiences and trust their frontline teams can achieve lasting growth.

His new book, Shop Different: How Retail Revealed Apple’s Genius, arrives September 22, 2026, marking the 25th anniversary of the Apple Store.
