Uncovering the Universe’s Hidden Secrets with the James Webb Space Telescope

We continue to reap the benefits of Gregory Robinson’s work as the former director of the James Webb Space Telescope project. Last week, CNN announced the Webb telescope revealed 6 galaxies from 500 and 700 million years after the big bang—and they’re much more massive than anyone anticipated. Researchers only expected to find young, tiny galaxies from that point in time. It was a shock to find galaxies as enormous and mature as our own in what we once thought was the beginning of the universe.

How did the telescope detect these galaxies if they’re so far away? Using infrared light, the telescope can observe stars and galaxies from up to about 13.5 billion years ago. Learn more about it here
