In his latest Fortune article, former OpenAI executive Zack Kass argues that while AI is eliminating many jobs, the real struggle isn’t just finding another paycheck. The deeper challenge comes if we tie our identity too closely to our work. We often define ourselves by what we do, and the rise of AI challenges that connection.

Zack urges us to separate who we are from what we do and to find purpose beyond a single career. As he writes, “We won’t be miserable because we can’t feed ourselves, but because we’ve lost a familiar way of answering the question, ‘Who am I?’”
