More About Mitch Lowe
A high school drop-out who became a serial entrepreneur, Mitch Lowe was one of the early pioneers in the nascent movie rental industry. In the 1980’s he built a chain of stores in Northern California, becoming active in the industry’s trade association and serving as president of its national board. He also tried to launch VHS video rental kiosks and a subscription-based website provider, ideas that found success later in his career.
Mitch’s turning point came in the late 1990’s, when he was recruited by Marc Randolph, Co-founder and first CEO of Netflix and his partner, Reed Hastings, to become the start-up’s video industry expert. As VP of Business Development and Strategic Alliances during Netflix’s first five years, and as a member of its core executive team, Mitch led many of the partnerships that drove new subscribers to join Netflix, including its partnership with Best Buy and DVD manufacturers.

Mitch left Netflix in 2003 after its highly successful IPO to join the business development team at McDonald’s Corporation. There, he built a DVD kiosk business that eventually became Redbox. He went on to serve as Redbox’s COO and president for eight years, growing the company from $36K to over $1.5B in revenue. In late 2011, Mitch left to become an investor in various spaces, including blockchain and social media and to serve on a number of corporate and nonprofit boards. In 2016, Mitch became CEO of MoviePass, the much-lauded movie theater subscription that, even as it failed, permanently changed the way movie theaters operate. Through both success and failure, Mitch learned that genuine disruption doesn’t always mean aggressive upheaval and overnight success. More often than not, he says, true disruption is the result of perseverance, imagination, and a constantly evolving quest to understand what customers really want.
Today, Mitch Lowe enjoys sharing his experiences and unforgettable stories with speaking audiences around the world and making media appearances that include Forbes, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Variety and The Wall Street Journal. Whether he’s speaking about the future of leadership, entrepreneurship, company culture, the $2 trillion entertainment industry or the trillion dollar Metaverse industry, Mitch’s high energy presentations inspire change, challenge thinking and provide actionable advice to accelerate personal and business growth.
