Five Ideas From One of the Most Innovative Market Executives in the World, Bonin Bough

Bonin Bough is on a mission to make the world a better place through innovation. As one of the foremost-awarded marketing executives in the world and the author of Txt Me (646) 759-1837, he understands how to conceive and implement new ideas.

During his time as Chief Media Officer at Mondelez International, Bonin managed over $3 Billion dollars in media spending, making him the seventh largest media buyer in the world. You can thank him for Sour Patch Kids becoming one of the fastest-growing candy brands in the world.

Now he’s using the wisdom he learned from marketing and branding to help people and organizations innovate. Here are five ideas from Bonin’s talks to get you started.

1) Own The Narrative

If you want to change how things are, you need to own the narrative. It’s one thing to be in front of the camera, another to be behind it, and yet another to own the camera. People who shape the narrative can impact our worldview and culture. So if you desire to see something new in the world, you need to add new narratives with new voices. Diverse narratives create understanding and compassion that will lead us to a richer culture.

2) Diversity of Thought Leads to Innovation

Diversity is key to innovation. It’s not just about people who look different or filling quotas. Diversity is about different thinking and ideas. When we have the same people from the same backgrounds, we end up with the same ideas. If we don’t bring in people who look different than us, something is lost. We miss out on new ideas and opportunities that will lead to innovation, creativity, and long-term growth.

3) Change Requires Relentlessness

If you look at the bad events in the world, you might feel nothing ever changes. You might experience an event like George Floyd’s death, Black Lives Matters marches, and riots, and then do it all over again the next month when another person is killed and think everything remains the same. Why bother? This is just the way things are. That’s not true. What’s true is change is hard. If you want things to change, you need to be relentless. It’s not enough to make a commitment. You also have to be committed to change.

4) Aspiration Is Not Enough to Succeed

You can aspire to do anything in life, but aspiration is not enough. You can aspire to be the fittest person in the world, but that doesn’t matter if you don’t go to the gym or exercise. So when you look at where you are in life or where your business stands, you have to ask yourself a question. Are you investing your time and effort in where you want your life or business to go? If you aren’t, then you need to make a change to where you invest your time and effort.

5) Change Begins With a Coalition of the Willing

You don’t need to convince everybody at first in order to change the world. You just need to find a small group that believes in your vision. When Bonin Bough was trying to develop his Customized Oreos experience, everyone thought the idea would fail. But six people said they would help. While the first prototype did fail, the people who did believe didn’t give up. They were able to learn from their failure, change the process, and eventually make the first customized 3D-printed Oreos at SXSW in 2017. As long as you have a small group who believes, you can do anything.
