About Keynote Speaker Karamo Brown

Karamo Brown is known as QUEER EYE’s beloved culture expert – and believes that culture is so much more than art museums and the ballet—it’s how people feel about themselves and others, how they relate to the world around them, and how their shared labels, burdens, and experiences affect their daily lives in ways both subtle and profound. Seen through this lens, Karamo is culture: his family is Jamaican and Cuban; he was raised in the South in predominantly white neighborhoods and attended an HBCU (Historically Black College/University); he was trained as a social worker and psychotherapist; he overcame personal issues of colorism, physical and emotional abuse, alcohol and drug addiction, and public infamy; he is a proud and dedicated gay single father of two boys, one biological and one adopted. It is by discussing deep subjects like these, he feels, that the makeovers on the show can attain their full, lasting meaning. Styling your hair and getting new clothes and furniture are important, but it’s imperative that you figure out why you haven’t done so in twenty years so you can truly change your life.

In 2022, he launched his daytime talk show KARAMO, marking a lifelong dream for him, where he guides his guests through life’s dramatic crossroads.

He fearlessly made waves as the first openly-gay Black American cast on MTV’s reality show THE REAL WORLD in 2004. He has been a host & segment producer for the OWN show on the Oprah Winfrey Network, a host for Huffington Post Live, a Family Advocate contributor for HLN/CNN, a cast member on TV One’s hit docuseries THE NEXT 15, and the host of MTV’s ARE YOU THE ONE: SECOND CHANCES. He competed on the 28th season of DANCING WITH THE STARS.

He co-founded skincare line MANTL in 2020, a personal-care brand for bald and balding men. His eye-opening and moving memoir (2019) comprises every adversity he has overcome, as well as the lessons he has learned along the way. He authored I AM OKAY TO FEEL (2022) with his son, an empowering picture book that invites us to explore and embrace our emotions. His involvement with the Obama Administration in shaping policies for LGBTQ+ youth and communities has shaped his understanding of the impact of policy changes on marginalized groups. His advocacy for mental health awareness and support highlights the intersection between mental health, success, and finding one’s true purpose.
