Expressing a new idea is difficult. How do you get your idea to the launchpad? The power of story is the secret sauce. Similar to design thinking, Paul will share his journey at NASA as the Chief Story Architect in developing a “narrative thinking” mindset that helps mission concept teams build emotional investment within stakeholders, a “shared story” that centers the team and optimizes team dynamics. Paul will also share his personal story of creating a career in a highly scientific and technical culture that did not formerly exist (JPL’s StoryLab). With humor and grace, Paul will share stories on how to connect to your culture and how to uncover your shared story. Through his presentation, you will see that sometimes new partnerships and technology are needed to see your story, but sometimes you just need a new perspective.

About Keynote Speaker Paul Propster

A seasoned strategy-lover, communicator, line-blurrer, and dot-connector, Paul has more than with more than 20 years in strategic communications and business development, He has helped clients from small, women-owned businesses to energy to technology to NASA, to cultivate a strategic narrative that produces stakeholder engagement.

Paul was born raised in “the OC” in southern California. As the sixth of seven siblings, he literally lived “The Wonder Years” life in the suburbs of Los Angeles. His father and Uncle were brilliant engineers in the budding Aerospace industry of the 60s and 70s. His Uncle Chuck worked closely with Steven Spielberg’s dad on several projects “he couldn’t talk about”.

Paul discovered his love for story at a young age winning several writing contests in school. He also excelled in college while getting his degree in Communications, attending UCLA Film School, and working as a “co-op” student at Hughes Aircraft in SoCal. It’s the balance of being immersed in these cultures that has given Paul the unique skillset to distill complex ideas into compelling stories.

In his 9 years at NASA, Paul has been recognized 8 times for his efforts in developing stories that live at the “edge of possibility”. In his first two years with NASA, he led the capture of: a $100M Earth mission, a $55M Heliopyhsics mission, and a $5M Astrophysics mission. More recently he “rewrote” JPL’s Technology Highlights annual report, which won two communication industry awards: The 23rd Annual Communicator Award of Distinction and The 2016 MarCom Awards Platinum Winner…a first for JPL. Paul has been the lead story architect for NASA/JPL’s Annual reports for 2021 and 2022.

Paul is an old, salty surfer, cyclist, musician, and movie lover who enjoys spending as much time as possible at the beach. He lives with his wife Laurie, his 3 teenage sons, and his 91 year old mother-in-law.
