The Netflix Chronicles: Celebrating 25 Years!

In honor of Netflix’s 25 year anniversary last week, Co-founder Marc Randolph shared a series of posts he called the ‘Netflix Chronicles’ on LinkedIn about the birth of Netflix and challenges they faced along the way. It’s a rare inside look at one of the most successful companies of our time, and one that will leave you feeling inspired and amazed.

Sneak peeks of each post:

Netflix Chronicle #1: “We launched Netflix 25 years ago this week. In celebration, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite memories—from the initial idea through the years I spent at the company.”

Netflix Chronicle #2: “OK Reed, I’ve got another one. Personalized shampoo!” Reed shifted his eyes from the road to glance over at me. He raised his eyebrows quizzically. “No, this is a good one,” I assured him. “We’ll have people cut off a lock of their hair. They’ll mail it to us, and our team of hair scientists will formulate a custom blend. They’ll automatically get sent a fresh bottle every month!”

Netflix Chronicle #3: “Jesus, Reed, where are you taking us?” Reed looked down at the MapQuest printout he was using to navigate us, probably wondering the same thing. We were in Seattle. The street we were walking on looked like a movie-set of Skid Row. There was trash on the sidewalk, broken glass in the window casements. We passed The Liberty Loans Pawn Shop. The Fair Hair Wig Store. And then, a few doors down, another run-down, four-story brick building. I could just see into the dimly lit lobby. On the wall, behind a faded wood desk, was a large sign reading [Amazon. Com]”

Netflix Chronicle #4: “25 years ago, In 1998, Reed and I flew to Seattle to talk about selling Netflix to Amazon. The meeting went well, and Jeff Bezos floated a price of $15 million.”

Netflix Chronicle #5: “Exactly 25 years ago today – on April 14th, 1998, at 8am in the morning, Eric Meyer leaned forward, tapped a few keys on his laptop, and launched Netflix to the world.”
