Two Guys, a Big Idea, and a Lot of “This Will Never Work.”

When Marc Randolph and Mitch Lowe get on stage together, you’re not getting the corporate version of the Netflix story.

You’re getting the version with the arguments, the near-misses, the late-night debates, and the moments where they honestly weren’t sure they’d make payroll.

Marc Randolph was the visionary who believed you could mail movies to people in little red envelopes and somehow compete with giant stores on every corner. Mitch was the operator obsessed with making the experience so good customers would never want to go back to those stores..

Most people thought they were crazy. Some days, Marc and Mitch agreed with them.

In this conversation, they will walk through what it really took to build Netflix from scratch — how they tested ideas quickly (and killed a lot of bad ones), how they built a culture that rewarded smart risk-taking, and how they survived moments when one wrong move could have ended the whole thing.

They’ll talk about:

  • The meeting where they tried to sell Netflix to Blockbuster (yes, that meeting)
  • The decisions that almost broke the venture
  • The cultural principles that let Netflix reinvent itself again and again
  • Why success can be more dangerous than failure

This isn’t nostalgia. It’s a conversation about leadership under pressure, about innovation when the odds aren’t in your favor, and about having the courage to disrupt yourself before someone else does.

And along the way, you’ll hear a few stories that didn’t make it into the press releases.

Because the real lesson of Netflix isn’t about streaming.

It’s about building something bold enough — and resilient enough — to survive its own success.

Additionally Marc and Mitch can share their perspectives on what it takes to be successful in a new enterprise these days as well as AI and the Future of Media and Entertainment.

Remember when Netflix decided to increase their monthly fee by 60% or when Redbox raised their rental prices higher than $1 per night? Drawing on instances from his time at Netflix and Redbox, Mitch explains decisions made when the companies faced existential and strategic crises, providing reasoning behind those decisions and their effects—for better and/or worse.

Mitch discusses the wrong ways to make a decision and which factors are actually not helpful in the decision making process. He then details how to make a well-informed decision by looking holistically at the pros and cons, the processes and resources through which a decision is implemented, and the likelihood of success. This, along with Mitch’s other presentations, can be tailored to the audience, whether they be marketing, sales, operations, strategic based.

Theory and strategy are important, but execution is absolutely crucial. Sharing stories from his experiences at Netflix and Redbox, Mitch reveals the framework for designing and implementing a positive and winning culture.

The culture that developed in the early days of Netflix played a large role in the success of the company, and when Mitch took over as Redbox President he brought that culture with him. While, Redbox—a Chicago based company with midwest values–was a very different company than the Silicon Valley based Netflix, Mitch was able to implement the framework of the successful Netflix culture and customize it to fit Redbox’s goals and company values. In this presentation Mitch, shows how a winning culture can be customized to align with any company’s unique philosophy to create an exceptional working environment that you and your employees will be proud of.

  • The history of storytellers
  • The state of the entertainment industry today
  • How Tiktok could replace Netflix as THE entertainment site and how shorter attention spans play a role in that

About Keynote Speaker J. Mitch Lowe

A pioneer in the entertainment industry who has literally changed the way that we watch movies and television, Mitch Lowe is a co-founding executive of Netflix, former president of Redbox, and former CEO of Movie Pass. He went on to become an investor in the entertainment, blockchain and social media spaces and to co-found Meta Entertainment World, a global event that brings together professionals involved with the Metaverse. His book, Watch and Learn: How I Turned Hollywood Upside Down with Netflix, Redbox and Movie Pass–Lessons in Disruption has become a must-read on the subject of innovating in the face of disruption, seeing ahead of the curve and intuiting customer needs. Today, Mitch gives inspirational keynotes around the world, sharing invaluable stories and insights from his legendary career.

More About Mitch Lowe

A high school drop-out who became a serial entrepreneur, Mitch Lowe was one of the early pioneers in the nascent movie rental industry. In the 1980’s he built a chain of stores in Northern California, becoming active in the industry’s trade association and serving as president of its national board. He also tried to launch VHS video rental kiosks and a subscription-based website provider, ideas that found success later in his career.

Mitch’s turning point came in the late 1990’s, when he was recruited by Marc Randolph, Co-founder and first CEO of Netflix and his partner, Reed Hastings, to become the start-up’s video industry expert. As VP of Business Development and Strategic Alliances during Netflix’s first five years, and as a member of its core executive team, Mitch led many of the partnerships that drove new subscribers to join Netflix, including its partnership with Best Buy and DVD manufacturers.

Mitch left Netflix in 2003 after its highly successful IPO to join the business development team at McDonald’s Corporation. There, he built a DVD kiosk business that eventually became Redbox. He went on to serve as Redbox’s COO and president for eight years, growing the company from $36K to over $1.5B in revenue. In late 2011, Mitch left to become an investor in various spaces, including blockchain and social media and to serve on a number of corporate and nonprofit boards. In 2016, Mitch became CEO of MoviePass, the much-lauded movie theater subscription that, even as it failed, permanently changed the way movie theaters operate. Through both success and failure, Mitch learned that genuine disruption doesn’t always mean aggressive upheaval and overnight success. More often than not, he says, true disruption is the result of perseverance, imagination, and a constantly evolving quest to understand what customers really want.

Today, Mitch Lowe enjoys sharing his experiences and unforgettable stories with speaking audiences around the world and making media appearances that include Forbes, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Variety and The Wall Street Journal. Whether he’s speaking about the future of leadership, entrepreneurship, company culture, the $2 trillion entertainment industry or the trillion dollar Metaverse industry, Mitch’s high energy presentations inspire change, challenge thinking and provide actionable advice to accelerate personal and business growth.
