What Does Netflix’s Acquisition of Warner Bros. Mean for the Industry?
The recent announcement that Netflix plans to acquire Warner Bros.– and with its vast film archives, the famous studio lot, and HBO– has sent creators, journalists and executives into a tizzy.
Having partnered with folks from both organizations in his work as a media attorney and talent agent including Netflix Co-founder Marc Randolph, former CTO Patty McCord and former VP pf Product Management Gibson Biddle, BigSpeak’s EVP Ken Sterling wished to provide a limited analysis for anyone anxious about what this deal will mean for the future of entertainment. In his recent article for Inc., he shares his insights into the wider implications of this merger, with the understanding that Netflix enjoys a substantial advantage in the proceedings.
The acquisition of Warner Bros. offers Netflix full access to a lucrative, deep content library as well as extensive studio infrastructure that will allow the company to rely less on external vendors and cut development time. Having high quality old content and streamlining the production of new output are large and definite upsides.
Despite the obvious advantage, Sterling also acknowledges there is some level of risk involved, with such a merger likely disadvantaging independent creators and limiting consumer choice as fewer and fewer mega-corps produce the vast majority of global entertainment. The effect on the market is difficult to predict at this point, and will continue to cause uncertainty that is impossible to address in the short term.
