What is it about teams that attracts you so much?

When you’re on a really high performance world class team, like I was lucky enough to do in the sport of adventure racing and as a firefighter, you are truly operating with one heart and one mind, and you’re capitalizing on each other’s strengths and shoring up weaknesses, and everyone’s ego is left at the start line, and it’s all about the focus on the goal and not who gets the credit.

How have you redefined your relationship with fear?

I’m not fearless at all. I’m not like a big risk taker but I think the fear for me is a not accomplishing what I set out to do. I think a lot of that is alleviated by putting character bricks in the own wall in your life by continually challenging yourself and building that wall of bricks and bricks and bricks of accomplishments and things that you’ve been afraid of and you did them anyway.
